Medicare
Medicare is a uniquely Canadian program. Its goal is to provide
Canadians of all backgrounds and incomes with high-quality
health care when they require it -- and without the fear of
not being able to afford it.
RNAO has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that
the principles of the Canadian Health Act are respected, and
any legislation that threatens any Canadian's access to needed
care never becomes law.
In this section:
- Facts
About Medicare - Medicare was made in Canada - for all
Canadians. Every person in Canada - young and old, rich
and poor, has a right to equal access to equal health care.
- The
Canadian Health Act: Protecting Public Health-Care -
Canada’s public health-care system is also the law.
In 1984, Parliament passed the Canada Health Act (CHA).
- Medicare
and Nursing - Few professional groups are as committed
to the preservation of medicare as nurses. Registered nurses
have been key to building Canada’s universally accessible
not-for-profit health-care system.
